About Me

Hello there! I'm Kate. Artist, writer, singer-songwriter, feminist, Nerdfighter, and lover of food, fashion, music, books, zines, art of all kinds, flower crowns, smart people, museums, travel, nature, red hair, and cats. I have a minor chocolate addiction. Born and raised in Los Angeles, now studying in Virginia. I hope to write and illustrate books for children and young adults. I have been published in four anthologies with WriteGirl and wrote a winning piece for a short story contest that was published in American Girl magazine when I was in fifth grade. I collect business cards, postcards, buttons/pins, and socks. My favorite color is purple.

About This Blog

The Cloth Sloth is my personal style blog. This means I document my outfits with photographs and descriptions and share them with all of you lovely people! I try to post a few times a week, or as often as possible given my hectic art school schedule and workload.

My style doesn't fit into any one (or two, or three) particular label(s). I think of it like this: I WEAR WHATEVER THE HECK I WANT. I wear the clothes I do because I like them and I think they look good together on me. Simple as that!

I created The Cloth Sloth in the summer of 2014 because of two major events that occurred:
  1. I was inspired by other teen style bloggers like Tavi, Arabelle, Marlena, and Zoe. While in awe of what these awesome girls were doing, I acknowledged that I had a unique personal style as well and wanted to do the same.
  2. With each passing day, I received more and more compliments on my outfits. In the past, mostly adults would comment on my style, but more recently, many of my own peers took notice. The comments went beyond compliments, many asking me where I got certain items (the answer was often "Goodwill", which both amazed and temporarily disappointed my audience). The more attention I got, the more I felt the need to document my outfits and make them more accessible.
I chose the name The Cloth Sloth mainly for its rhyming cleverness, but also for its relevance. I have always been a slow mover. I like to take my time. I'm always the last one at the dinner table, the last one cleaning up her paints, the last one to finish a test. It's not that I'm a slow learner. It's not that I don't care. It's not that I want it to take forever or waste other people's time. I like to taste all the flavors. I like to let everything sink and settle in. I like to stop and think and reconsider and review my work before calling it done. I'm a constant observer, and it takes a long time to fully observe something. If I moved through life as fast as everyone else does, I'd be missing so much. As an artist I feel obligated to make sure not to miss those moments that others never give themselves the chance to witness or appreciate. My careful observations inform my work. This also applies to my personal style. I spend hours every week poring over inspirations, memorizing every inch of fabric. I can spend several hours in a single thrift store. Each morning I set aside half an hour just to figure out what to wear. In this way, I am indeed a cloth sloth.
